Copyright and Permissions

Who holds copyright, and how to request reuse.

This page sets out who holds copyright in work published by The Journal of Natural Law, how published articles may be read, and what an author may do with their own work after publication. It summarizes the publishing agreement that each author signs on acceptance; the agreement itself remains the controlling document.

Copyright

On acceptance, the author enters into the publishing agreement of The Catholic University of America Press and assigns to the Press the work, together with the rights protected by copyright in the United States and abroad. Those rights include translating, abridging, and selecting from the work, and printing, publishing, and selling it in every language and format. The Press holds copyright in the published article and secures it in its own name.

Access

Articles are published in The Journal of Natural Law and hosted on Project MUSE, where they are available to subscribers and to readers at subscribing institutions. The journal is not open access.

What authors may do with their work

Six months after the issue appears, an author may post the article on a personal website, deposit it in an institutional repository, or reprint it, whole or revised, in a book or collection that the author writes or edits. Each such use must carry the following acknowledgment, with the volume and year of the issue supplied:

First published in The Journal of Natural Law, [volume]. Copyright © [year] The Catholic University of America Press.

Permissions

Requests to reproduce a published article, in whole or in substantial part, are administered on the Press’s behalf by the Copyright Clearance Center. Submit a request through CCC Marketplace, giving the author, the title, the year, and the pages or figures concerned. The Press sets out the full procedure, including translation and other subsidiary rights, on its Rights and Permissions page.

Third-party material

Authors are responsible for obtaining, at their own expense, written permission for any third-party material under copyright that appears in their work, and for supplying the accompanying credit lines.

Payment and copies

The journal charges no submission or publication fees, and authors receive no payment. Each contributor receives one copy of the issue in which the work appears.
